Dog crate sizing, without the guesswork

One crate has to pass two different fit checks.

A useful dog crate size is based on the individual dog’s body length, standing height, and shoulder width—not weight alone. A travel crate also has to pass through the narrowest part of the vehicle opening and fit inside the usable cargo space. Fit My Crate checks those questions separately so a roomy crate for the dog is not mistaken for a crate that will fit the car.

Start with the dog

Measure nose to tail base, floor to the top of the head or ears, and the widest part of the shoulders. Compare those measurements with the crate’s interior dimensions.

Check the real opening

Cargo volume is not enough. Measure the hatch width and height, space between wheel arches, floor depth, and the lowest usable interior height.

Use charts as a shortlist

Nominal 36-, 42-, and 48-inch labels vary by brand. Use a size chart to narrow the choices, then confirm the manufacturer’s current inside and outside dimensions.

The result is a rectangular geometry estimate. It does not rate crash protection, restraint systems, ventilation, temperature, or veterinary suitability. Confirm the physical setup and current manufacturer instructions before travel.
