Common retail crate sizes
| Crate class | Typical dog weight | Example breeds |
|---|---|---|
| 24 inch | Up to 25 lb | Pug, small Dachshund |
| 30 inch | 26–40 lb | Beagle, French Bulldog |
| 36 inch | 41–70 lb | Border Collie, smaller Boxer |
| 42 inch | 71–90 lb | Labrador, Golden Retriever |
| 48 inch | 91–110 lb | Large German Shepherd, Rottweiler |
“42 inch” usually describes nominal crate length. Interior dimensions vary by brand, wall shape and door design.
How to choose between two sizes
Choose the smallest crate that still lets the dog stand without ducking, turn around, and lie comfortably. If a measurement is close to the limit, compare the actual interior dimensions rather than relying on the size label. Growing puppies can use an adult-size crate with a suitable divider.
