What size crate does a Labrador need?

Many adult Labradors start with a 42-inch crate, but individual Labs vary enough that body measurements—not breed name—should make the final decision.

Quick answer

A standard 42-inch crate is a common shopping category for an adult Labrador Retriever. A smaller adult may fit a roomy 36-inch model; a long, tall or heavy Lab may need a 48-inch model. Because nominal sizes are not interior measurements, check the manufacturer’s inside length and height.

Measure your Labrador

  1. Measure from the nose to the base of the tail while the dog stands naturally.
  2. Measure from the floor to the highest natural point of the head or upright ears.
  3. Measure straight across the widest part of the shoulders.
  4. Compare those figures with the crate’s interior dimensions and allow room to stand, turn and lie down.
For puppies: estimate the adult requirement and use a divider designed for the crate. Re-measure during growth rather than assuming the first divider position remains suitable.

Will a Labrador crate fit in your SUV?

A typical Labrador crate can be too tall for a curved hatch even when the published cargo volume sounds large. Measure the narrowest hatch width, lowest opening height, width between wheel arches, usable floor depth and lowest roof height. Check the crate’s maximum exterior height, including handles.
